There may be several reasons why you choose to register your child at another regular primary school in Amsterdam or Diemen. The most common reason is a move. But it may also be that another school appeals to you more, or that you are not satisfied with the current school.

Firstly, the new school will check if it has room for your child. If yes, the new school will request more information from you and the previous school about the way your child functions (at school).

Yes, you are free to register your child at another regular school. This school will request information from you and the previous school  about your child. Even without your permission, the schools may exchange certain information about your child. If you do not give permission to exchange the pupil file, the school where your child comes from is allowed to fill in an educational report and send it to you and the new school. The new school will first check to see if there is room for your child. Then the new school examines whether it can meet your child's educational needs. Finally, the school decides whether to register your child or refer him or her back to the school your child comes from.

If you want to know more about a regular primary school, it is best to ask the school itself. You can also take a look at the school's website. Here you will find all the schools in Amsterdam and Diemen in a handy overview. Choose a school on the map, or use the filters. If you click on school, you will see the website.

If you want to know more about different types of special (primary) education and which schools fall into this category, you can read more here. You can also contact one of our social experts (maatschappelijk deskundige).

Most schools have described in their policy, for example in their school support profile, the maximum number of pupils allowed in a classroom. If school can show that the class your child should be in is full, then they may refer to other schools, although you are then responsible for finding another school.

If the school has not described in a policy document when a class is full, then the school has a duty of care (zorgplicht). School must then investigate whether it can meet your child's educational needs. If the school is not able to do this and can justify it well, it has to find another suitable school for your child, either another regular school, or a type of special (primary) education. In that latter case, the school will register your child with us for the application for a declaration of admissibility (toelaatbaarheidsverklaring, TLV).
